About Us

The Goffs Park Light Railway is operated entirely voluntarily by the Crawley Model Engineers club members, and provides public passenger rides every Sunday & Bank Holiday Monday afternoons between late March & late October (BST) between the hours of 2pm and 5pm*.
The Crawley Model Engineers is a nonprofit organisation that was founded in 1962 by a group of engineers working in one of the factories in Crawley. Shortly after its formation, the Club approached the local Council for a site in Goffs Park on which to build a raised level track. Permission was granted & an ‘up & down’ track of about 750 feet was built.
Two years later an extended section was opened to give a complete circuit of approximately 1250 feet or 380 metres. This required two cuttings & help was given by the Council with a digger & a dumper truck. The railway has continued to run since that date, the original railway sleeper bed was replaced in the 1980s with custom made girders. The aluminium track has a ruling grade of about 1 in 100 with two short sections of 1 in 80.
The Goffs Park Light Railway is situated about 1 mile west of Crawley High Street, alongside the Crawley to Horsham mainline railway: postcode RH11 8PB. Click this link for Google Map location.
The elevated 1250 feet / 380 metre long circuit has 5 & 3½ inch capability, although only 5 inch locomotives can pull the passenger carriages.
The fare is 50 pence (50p) per ride which takes approximately two minutes to complete a circuit of the track.
We often run private party events for children’s playgroups or associations like the Guides/Scouts, so if you'd like to have the railway to yourself for a few hours on a weekday please use the Contact Us form or find us on Facebook.
The club owns 6 locomotives (3 small coal fired steam plus 4 battery electric) & 6 passenger carriages, also there are 3 driving cars that are available for light locomotive only use. 1 of the club steam locos is now in full running service, 1 is in pieces & the other is just about to undergo a thorough overhaul. A couple of our more recent members own their own steam locomotives - we have started to run steam passenger rides for the first time in a few years.
On Wednesday mornings during the whole year we meet up at the track to perform routine or emergency maintenance; sometimes it's just to chat & drink tea. During the winter closed season we also meet on a Sunday morning*. You might also see us running our locos - it's a good time to test out repairs & teach new drivers how to operate the locos too.
We're always on the lookout for new members to help maintain and run the railway - please use the the Contact Us form if you'd like to know more about what we do - or just drop in if you see us about on the railway.
See the newsletter link above for up to date information, or check our Facebook pages for on the day information.
